Chapter Seven
A brisk gust of wind blew across the field, whipping up little whirlwinds of tiny white flakes as Gabby slogged through the fresh blanket of snow coating the ground. The pale pink scarf Matt had given her last Christmas wrapped snug around her neck. She’d flipped it up to cover her nose and lips, but it hadn’t helped much. Her cheeks and nose burned with the frosty sting of winter. She wouldn’t have wished it any other way. Watching Con and Car pick out their Christmas tree with their fathers was worth enduring whatever winter threw at her, including a numb backside and frozen fingers.
Much to Gabby’s disappointment, her romantic weekend with her husbands had ended almost as soon as it began. After her long bath and a delicious breakfast in bed, one of the neighbors called asking for help to corral some horses that had escaped sometime during the night. In a part of the world where the winters were harsh and the summers were short, neighbors were expected to help neighbors. It was the way of the land in Montana. Unless you were a Grunion asking a McLendon for help of course, or vice versa. Gabby still hadn’t figured out what their century-long feud was about. She’d asked Hazel and her husbands a few questions once, but no one seemed to know exactly why it started or what events perpetuated the ongoing tension between the two families. One thing was certain; if the men in the Grunion family were half as stubborn as the men in this family, whatever bad blood ran between them wouldn’t be drying up any time soon.
Gabby hunched her shoulders against a strong burst of wind as she pondered the previous two days, keeping her eyes on the twin boys as they darted between rows of trees that sprawled the vast tree farm. Gone most of the day, Mason had come home early from the neighboring ranch, but stayed out in the barn tending to their own horses. Dusk was approaching when Matt and Grey finally stomped in from the snow, dirty and exhausted. Too exhausted, apparently, to do anything more than eat, shower and crawl into bed...to sleep.
The next morning she awoke alone. On the bedside table she found a note from Grey tucked into a book she’d given up trying to read months ago, telling her to enjoy another long bath then to snuggle up beside the fire and enjoy some quiet reading time. She did exactly that until Grey, Matt and Mason returned from their trip into town; finishing up their Christmas shopping, they’d told her. By then, she was more than anxious to see her babies. Mason drove her over to their parents’ home to pick them up and then it was back to unregulated feeding schedules and the general chaos that came with eight-year-old twin boys.
Gabby’s anxious sigh bellowed out like a thick fog into the cold winter air. She had welcomed the few hours she’d had to herself.
